Leatrice Van Schmitt's Obituary
Leatrice Van Schmitt passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the age of 85 after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Emma A. Van; father, August A. Van, Sr.; and Joyce Van Hazard (John). She was the mother of Susan S. Koine, Barbara S. Cruthirds (Charles), Jay Schmitt and Lisa S. Silver (David). Grandmother of Phil Koine, Jr. (Cheryl), Jennifer Koine Davies (Chad), Christopher Cruthirds (Heather), Lauren Cruthirds, Lindsay Cruthirds, Jason Broome (Jennifer), Amanda Silver and Laine Silver. Great-grandmother of Shane Davies, Jacob Davies, Colin Cruthirds, Caden Cruthirds and Joshua Cruthirds. “Adopted” grandmother of Dana Brocato, Susan McNamara and Susan LeBlanc. Sister of August A. Van, Jr. (Myrle). Very special aunt of Janet Hazard (Bob) and Jeanine V. Seeber (Phil). Longtime friend of Gloria Rodriguez and Herbert Kesler.
She was a native of New Orleans and a resident of Covington for the past 22 years. She was a retired secretary to Judge Charles Schwartz and the late Herbert Christenberry of the U.S. District Court. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. While working at a plant during WW II, she was given the title “Miss Production Control”. In 1968, she was elected President of Alpha Sigma Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. Everyone knew they were welcomed into her heart, home and pool. She will be sadly missed by all.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Mass on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 1:00 PM from the Chapel at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home Inc., 2260 W. 21st. Ave., Covington, LA 70433 with visitation on Friday beginning at 11:00 AM until Mass time.
Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer Masses or donations to The American Diabetes Association.
