Larry John Green's Obituary
Retired Judge Larry John Green died at home on Thursday, October 10th with his devoted and loving wife of 53 years, Martha, by his side.
Born on March 17, 1936 in Sun, Louisiana, Larry was the only child of Edra Hays Green and Luby John Green who were residents of Washington Parish.
A graduate of the School of Business, Louisiana State University in 1958, Larry was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army. He spent seven years in the Army Reserves and completed his service as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps in 1968.
During that time, Larry attended the Tulane School of Law. Upon graduation in 1964, he started his law practice in Covington where he worked until elected to the 22nd Judicial District Court in 1992. During his service he was active in the establishment of the Family Mediation-Custody Division of the Family Court and served as the sole Family Court Judge for eight years. He retired in 2008 having completed three terms.
Larry was a member and past president of both the Covington Bar Association and the St Tammany Bar Association and a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association. He was on the boards of the St Tammany Art Association, Christwood and CASA.
Larry was a member of Christ Episcopal Church for over 50 years. He served on the Vestry for two terms and headed the committee to save and restore the Chapel of Christ Church (circa 1846) in 1985. Larry also enjoyed over 40 years of membership in the Rex organization and delighted in riding in the parade.
And while Larry dedicated his life to helping others and serving his community, he was first and foremost a family man. He adored his family and home. He was ever present, supportive and always willing to listen. Larry loved to travel, garden and collect antiques, and he was a proponent of historic restoration and preservation.
Larry will be remembered for many things including his strong work ethic, boundless energy, gracious hospitality and positive demeanor. He was a people person - outgoing, inquisitive, curious and engaging. And he was stylish, ageless and full of life.
Larry is survived by his wife, Martha Currie Green, his son, John Hays Green (Christy), his daughter, Mary Green Rentschler (Charles) and granddaughters, Virginia Carlson Green, Martha Currie Rentschler and Mary Mitchell Rentschler all of whom he loved deeply and was very proud.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Larry’s life on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 11:00am at Christ Episcopal Church at 120 N. New Hampshire Street in Covington with the Rev. Fr. D. Seth Donald officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30am in the Parish Hall.
It was Larry’s wish that any memorial tributes kindly be made in the form of charitable donations to the Christ Episcopal Church Chapel Restoration Fund at 129 N. New Hampshire Street, Covington, LA 70433.
E.J. Fielding Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
