Joseph Peter Meyers Jr., CMS USAF (ret.)'s Obituary
On Friday, September 21, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Joseph "Joe" P. Meyers, Jr. peacefully entered into eternal life after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in New Orleans on September 26, 1937. He lived in Metairie until 2006, when he moved to Mandeville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie Lae Meyers and Joseph P. Meyers, Sr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Catherine "Kay" Choppin Meyers; his children: John Meyers (Alyce), Judy Meyers (Karelle LaMotte), Janice Meyers Hattier, and Jeffrey Meyers (Janelle); his grandchildren: Jamie Muller (Greg), Stacy, John (Libby), Julia, Joshua and Jacob Meyers, Emily, Elizabeth and Elliott Hattier; Jeremy Batson (Melinda). He is also survived by his sister, Alice Meyers Theriot (Mel); his brother, Gerald Meyers (Sheila), four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
CMS Joseph Meyers served as a member of the Louisiana Air National Guard 159th Civil Engineers for 35 years. He was a founding member and parishioner of St. Benilde Catholic Church until 2006, where he served two terms as Parish Council President and was an Extraordinary Minister of Communion and brought Holy Communion to the homebound. For the past 12 years, he has been a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, where he also served as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion and brought Holy Communion to the homebound. Joe was a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus, Assembly 2922 and was a member of the Monday Night Fishers of Men. He was a Man of Manresa for over 30 years as a member of Group 4. Joe was President of the Archbishop Chapelle High School Parents’ Club from 1977-1983. Along with his wife, served the Archdiocese of New Orleans as Lay Director of the TEC (Teen Encounter Christ) program throughout the 1980’s.
His family would like to thank his private sitter, Shavonda Jackson and the care givers of Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for the loving and gentle care and support they provided.
Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 12:30 PM with a visitation at church on Friday beginning at 10:30 AM.
