Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Salter family at this time. Thank You for sharing your beloved "Papa Jack" with us and the thousands of others he touched throughout his lifetime of greatness. Coach Jack Salter served the Lord faithfully every day of his life and we all know that he is now reunited with Miss Betty, Scott, and his family and friends that have gone before him. God first, then family, then Covington High is the way he lived his life and the way he encouraged us to live.
Coach Salter was a role model beyond compare and he had a special gift of making everyone around him feel important. He genuinely cared about everyone he came in contact with and always asked, "How are you?" and How is your family?". Coach and Miss Betty attended our wedding in 1995 and we're pretty certain that they attended more weddings together than anyone else in the history of Covington. Coach Salter richly deserved all the accolades and awards he received but rarely talked about them. If asked, he would quickly give the credit for his success to God, Miss Betty, his family, the coaches, the players, the parents, and anyone else he could think of.
Coach Salter said that his calling in life was to help mold boys into men through athletics and he carried that mission out to the fullest and beyond. Along the way, his message and teachings inspired girls, boys, adults, coaches, teachers, and people from every walk of life.
Fortunately for me, my family moved to Folsom in the spring of 1976 and I met Coach Salter the morning I enrolled at Covington High. I was immediately enthralled by him and he helped me get over the fact that I was entering my 3rd high school in 2 years. That afternoon he introduced me and welcomed me to the team during weightlifting at the old stadium and we started spring practice the next week. I became a proud Covington High Fighting Lion that day and Coach Salter truly served as a father figure to me from that day forward.
Think Positive, Teamwork, Dedication, and Giving 110% were all things that he drilled into us as football players but he also knew that following those ideas would carry us well through life. Coach Salter also taught us to respect our teammates and opponents alike and that in victory or defeat, we would always show class. I will always be proud of the fact that I was one of "Salter's boys" as described by a former opposing coach. I Love Coach Salter and I thank God for allowing me to be a part of Coach's life for the past 41 years.
There will never be another Jack Salter but Covington High and the Covington area will always be able to treasure the legacy of a really great man gracing our presence for the past 86 years.
Once a Lion, Always a Lion!
Our love to all of the Salters,
