Joseph Michael "Joey" Cherry's Obituary
Joseph Michael “Joey” Cherry passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 in Hammond, LA. He was born on April 17, 1997 in Metairie, LA to Mickey Joseph Cherry and Gina Pausina Cherry.
Joey was the loving big brother of Charles Stanley Cherry and David Francis Cherry. He was the beloved grandson of Myrna Cambre Cherry and the late Charles Anthony Cherry, and Stanley John Pausina and the late Virginia Zummo Pausina. Joey will be dearly missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Joey had the biggest smile and heart in the world. He was always looking for a way to get you to laugh. He was willing to help anyone in need at any moment. Joey enjoyed fishing, mud riding and working on his truck. He attended Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School and loved football, baseball and track. He was a 2015 graduate of St. Paul’s School where he was a track and football athlete. Joey’s specialty in track was the 110m and 300m hurdles. Joey played an integral role in three district as well as three St. Tammany Parish Championships. He still holds the St. Paul’s school record for the 300m hurdles.
Joey graduated from Northshore Technical Community College with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Mechanics. He was a valued employee of Star Equipment in Hammond. In 2017 and 2018, Joey returned to St. Paul’s to coach and mentor members of the track team. Through his quiet confidence and leadership, Joey’s efforts resulted in many successes on the track. He intended to coach again this year and will be with the team in spirit.
Joey was the hardest working 21 year old around. He always said, “There was never enough time in the day to get things done.” He truly knew what he wanted in life and was following his plan. He was dedicated and loved his work as a diesel mechanic. Joey will be laid to rest in Madisonville near a place that was very special to him.
