John Louis “Red” Smith, Jr., on Sunday, December 2, 2007, Daddy peacefully passed into the hands of his loving Father.
Aged 87 years, a lifelong resident of Covington, LA, Louis was the loving husband of the late Rita Heintz Smith and the son of the late John Louis Smith and Anna Moreell Smith. He was the beloved father of John L. “Jack” Smith, III, Lawrence F. “Larry” Smith, Henry J. “Smoke” Smith, Eugene M. Smith, Wanda Smith Skinner, Kevin J. Smith and the late Jill A. Smith and Cheryl A. Smith. Brother of the late Joseph Smith. He is survived by 21 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, all of whom dearly loved and respected their “Grandpa”.
Louis graduated from St. Paul’s School in 1937 and LSU with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1942. He was commissioned in the US Navy Civil Engineer Corp., attached to the Seabees during WWII. After the war, he worked for the US Engineers and was an engineering inspector for Shell Oil Co. In 1948, he joined his father in the family business, H.J.Smith’s Son. Louis cherished time spent with his children, teaching them his love for the outdoors, taking them hunting and fishing whenever he could, and introducing them to the family business.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral mass on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at 2:00 PM from St. Peter Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433. Visitation on Tuesday, AT THE CHURCH, from 11:30 AM until service time. Interment in St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cheryl-Rita Smith Scholarship Fund c/o Saint Scholastica Academy, P.O. Box 1210, Covington, LA 70434. E.J. Fielding Funeral Home Inc., 2260 W. 21st. Ave., Covington, LA 70433 entrusted with the arrangements.
