John Maurice LaPlante's Obituary
John Maurice LaPlante, Sr. passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018 surrounded by family at his home in Mandeville, LA. He was born on November 22, 1927 in New Orleans, LA to the late Gilbert A. La Plante and Catherine Gaffney LaPlante.
John was married to his beloved wife, Ann Montgomery LaPlante, for 67 years. He was the loving father of Barbara L. Chauvin (Ron), James G. LaPlante (Tammy), Joseph P. LaPlante, William G. LaPlante (Eileen), Robert L. LaPlante (Patricia), Lawrence J. LaPlante (Linda), Ann Marie Doescher (Mark), Timothy E. LaPlante (Liz), Elizabeth L. Romero (Miguel), and the late John M. LaPlante, Jr. (Merrill). John was very proud of his 31 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Gilbert A. LaPlante Jr., Katharine L. Fogarty, Rose L. Le Blanc, and Mary Pizzo.
Mr. LaPlante was born in New Orleans on November 22, 1927. He attended St Francis of Assisi and graduated from St Aloysius with the class of 1944. Returning to school on the GI bill, he graduated from Loyola University in 1958.
John LaPlante worked for Petroleum Helicopters, Inc. and Offshore Navigation, Inc. where he served for over 30 years, retiring as Secretary-Treasurer. He qualified as a Certified Public Accountant in 1960, the same year as he and his young family moved to Mandeville. He loved sports and loved teaching young people. Mr. LaPlante coached 4th ward baseball, softball and basketball teams and was instrumental in bringing Babe Ruth league baseball to Mandeville.
Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Mass at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 11:00 AM. A WAKE will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2018 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Visitation on Friday will be from 9:00 AM until Mass time.
