John August Gunther Jr.'s Obituary
John August Gunther, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. He was born in New Orleans, LA on July 7, 1939 and resided in Gretna and Terrytown for 75 years. He most recently resided in Ponchatoula, LA.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Tanya Mount of New Orleans and Regen Klein (Robert) of Madisonville; his grandchildren, Kathleen Huether (Jonathan) of Shepherdsville, KY, Cameron Mount, and Preston Klein.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Lucinda Carol Brown Gunther; his parents Mildred Katherine Stiles Gunther and Johannes August Gunther.
As a computer systems engineer, Mr. Gunther contributed to the Apollo 11 mission to the moon while employed at the Michoud Assembly Facility. He was also employed by the First National Bank of Jefferson, Datapoint Systems, and self-employed with Equinox Systems. He retired from the New Orleans Levee Board.
John was a lover of learning, avid reader of history, amateur astronomer, and passionate photographer. He served in the U.S. Army in the early 1960s at Schweinfurt, Germany where he was awarded the Expert Rifleman Badge for both the M1 and M14 rifles.
The family would like to thank the caregiving team at Avanti Senior Living Memory Care of Covington and Passages Hospice for their outstanding attention in the final months of his life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Gunther may be made to St. Tammany Parish Library, the Gretna Historical Society, and the American Astronomical Society.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
