John Charles Gaskins' Obituary
John Charles Gaskins, age 89, of Covington, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024. He was born on November 16, 1934, in Freemont, Nebraska, to John Cyrus and Irma Gaskins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Cyrus and Irma Emma Wobig Gaskins.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Mary Gebbia Gaskins; his children, Michael and Jennifer Gaskins, Patricia Gaskins Knockaert, and Richard Gaskins and fiancé Jennifer Massey, and Chelsea Piglia (granddaughter) and Garrett Piglia; step children Louis and Laura Schehr, Mark and Diana Schehr, and Nikki Crawford; his grandchildren, Kali, Sydney, Katie, Emma, Kelly, Jennifer, Allie, Jill, Chad, Kim, and Mark Jr.; and 11great-grandchildren plus 2 on the way. He is also survived by many extended family members, and friends.
Born in Nebraska, served in the Army during the Korean War, and educated in New Mexico, John made his way to southeastern Louisiana 60+ years ago working for Texaco as a Landman and Negotiator. Following his years at Texaco, he would join Louisiana Land and Exploration (LL&E) and become a Vice President where he oversaw international contracts. It was during his time at LL&E when he met his wife of 31 years, Mary Gaskins and created a family larger than the oil giants he worked for.
Over his lifetime, John enjoyed a love for fishing, further enhanced by his “fishing” trips with his group of dear friends known as the Eagles. He spent more time fishing than catching but it was always about the time with friends. Family vacations were equally important so he could spend time with his kids, especially the many trips to Navarre Beach which was his preferred destination to relax (hard to do with 3 kids).
As a father, grandfather, and great grandfather, John relished time with family (especially grandkids and great grandkids). John and Mary’s house was always open to all at Christmas including all extended family and friends who needed a place to celebrate the holiday. His love for family and friends will be carried on by all who knew and loved him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, Louisiana on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 2:00 PM with visitation beginning at 12:00 PM until service time.
