Brother John (Cleveland) Larose FSC's Obituary
Brother John (Cleveland) Larose, FSC, passed suddenly at St. Anthony’s Garden in Covington, LA, on March 16, 2024. Brother John was 85 years old and a member of the community of De La Salle Christian Brothers on the campus of Saint Paul’s School in Covington, LA. He was born on August 21, 1938, in New Orleans – the son of the late Cleveland Larose and Marie Morel. Brother John is survived by his sister Mary Oliver, his niece Kimberly King and family; and his cousin Mary Ann Marmillion and her family. He dedicated much attention and care to members of his family. On completing his high school education in 1956, Brother John went to the De La Salle Novitiate in Lafayette, LA and received his religious habit on December 7, 1956. After a year of religious studies, he attended St. Michael’s College in Santa Fe, NM, and received a B.A. degree in 1961. Brother John went on to earn an M.S. from the University of New Orleans, LA in 1975. The consummate mathematics teacher, Brother John served in a number of schools of the New Orleans-Santa Fe District: De La Salle High School, New Orleans, LA (1961-67, 1970-78); Archbishop Rummel High School, Metairie, LA (1967-70, 1980-93, 2007-08); St. Michael’s High School, Santa Fe, NM (1996-97); Hanson Memorial High School, Franklin, LA (2005-07). He also served in the IT department at the College of Santa Fe (1996-97) and as a teacher in the Midwest District at Christian Brothers High School, Memphis, TN (1997-2005). In his retirement at Christian Brothers School in New Orleans, LA (2008-2019) and St. Paul’s School Community, Covington, LA (2019-present), Brother John worked arduously on a series of articles concerned with the proper education of young people. He served for many years in the leadership and organization of the New Orleans Academic Games. In one of his Meditations, Saint La Salle, the Founder of the Brothers in 1680, wrote, “Oh! What a joy a Brother will have when he sees a great number of his students in possession of eternal happiness, for which they are indebted to him by the grace of Jesus Christ. What a sharing of joy there will be between the teacher and his students!” What joy Brother John must be experiencing as he joins his parents, his two sisters, Saint John Baptiste De La Salle and a great number of students he has taught and for whom he has cared – for nearly 65 years.
Services for Brother John will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at the Brothers Residence at the St. Paul’s campus in Covington, LA. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 with Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 AM, followed by inurnment at Saint Joseph Abbey, St. Benedict, LA.
