My first memory of John is how he and Ronnie would compete for who could pull off sneaking the bill off the restaurant table or pulling the waitress aside on the way to the bathroom so they could pay for the meal!!
How appropriate that John died so closely to the Feast of St Joseph. I always admired how John not only joyfully took on children that weren't his own and became their dad in a way that no one could tell, but he also remained in the background. More than likely he was always the smartest person in the room but he let everyone else operate while he just watched and accommodated them. If you were lucky enough to pull him in for a conversation you had better buckle up because he had details you didn't know existed and information that seemed to be falling from an encyclopedia as he spoke. In short if you got on "Who wants to be a Millionaire" he was definitely going to be your "phone a friend"!!
Navy pilot, engineer with Saturn 5, experience in the oilfield, it just didn't seem possible. He had to be a quiet accountant or a government employee somewhere in the background of an office. He had life experiences that many could only dream of and yet his modesty and kindness were always first.
I'll miss our genealogy discussions and his example of fatherhood but they will not be forgotten. He gave until the end and he finished the race and if I had to guess he went in a way that he would have wanted to, quickly and in the background.
May God grant John eternal peace,
Mark Sanborn
