Joe King was Dean of the College of Sciences at the University of New Orleans for many years and he was a great and caring leader. My lab benefited from his support, his respect for research scientists, and his guidance. Joe was smart and funny, but he could be hard-as-nails when he had to be. While I have a lot of stories about Joe’s humor and thoughtfulness, my favorite occurred one night after a long and boring university convocation. Joe and the other deans were asked by the upper administration to wear ties with the UNO logo on them to show school spirit. As I was leaving the science building to go home, I ran into Joe and some of the other deans who appeared to be holding their own celebration after escaping the convocation. Joe invited me to join them and I mentioned to him that I liked his tie. Without hesitating, he took the tie off, gave it to me and said, “Here, it’s yours!” Joe’s tie is still in my closet and when I am forced to attend onerous university events I wear it in memory of Joe and as a subtle form of protest against all things boring. Thanks Joe, we will miss you.
