Joan Jett's Obituary
Joan Jett passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 31, 2013. She was the loving and devoted wife of John Jett for 45 years, the beloved mother of Jennifer and Jason Jett and the cherished grandmother of Nicholas and Julien Liu.
Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Joan moved to the South with John soon after they married and it became her adopted home, though she forever retained a tinge of her New England accent. Joan and John lived in Baltimore, MD; Reedville, VA; Houma, LA; Hammond, LA and most recently Mandeville, LA. Hammond, where they lived for 26 years, was her home. It was there that she started the Shop for Habitat. Joan had been volunteering at the hospital, but she wanted to do more and she knew there were others in the community who felt the same way. So she conceived the idea for the Stop for Habitat, a thrift store which would turn over all earnings to the Ginger Ford Habitat for Humanity. With only a vision, hard work, lots of elbow grease, a truck with a lot of cargo area, excellent furniture moving skills and the kind of infectious personality that enticed others to join the adventure, she and a group of devoted friends got the Shop for Habitat off the ground. Throughout her life, Joan made many, many good friends; helped anyone in need; never knew a stranger; brought fun and adventure to most every day and was loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband John and her daughter Jennifer and her husband, Jason Liu. She was preceded in death by her son, Jason. Services will be held in Virginia. A memorial service will be held in Hammond at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, alzfdn.org, (866) 232-8484.
