I had the pleasure to work for Dr Smith in the North Oaks ER for three years. He was a great leader and friend.
To Melanie and family, Our Deepest Sympathy from Chris & Alethea. Praying for healing for your family. (So many Memories...Thanks Doc... We Love You!!!)
Dr. Jay Smith thank you for you dedication and service to our community. It has been an honor to work with you. Prayers for your family in this difficult time. God's Speed. Beckey Smith
My heart is heavy on learning of the death of Dr. Jay Smith. Never heard a harsh word or unkind remark from him at any time that I was ever in the ED. He was an exceptional physician and tremendous loss to the Medical Staff of North Oaks Health System.May God give his family strength to face each new day without him. His spirit will live forever in their hearts.
Melanie, Alex, Shelby and family...how can any of us express our profound sorrow at this time. From the first time I met him, I saw that Jay wore his enthusiasm and love for his work, his family and his friends like a badge of honor. It was the first thing you noticed about him and each subsequent encounter was just as memorable. He was passionate in all that he did...he literally attacked any project with an energy that was both admired and inspiring to anyone lucky enough to work with him. He had the rare ability to identify needs on a broad base and would work tirelessly to improve healthcare delivery, while at the same time, devote that same zeal and energy to provide the best care possible to each individual patient on every encounter. Each patient was important to him and great care was taken that every need was recognized. It Is said that "a hero is never a hero in his own hometown." However, that statement doesn't apply to Jay, for he most definitely was, and always will be, a hero. He is a hero to those of us fortunate enough to work with him on endless committees and improvement endeavors for causes that sometimes seemed impossible...because he helped us see what we could be. He is a hero to those who worked tirelessly alongside him in the ER as he inspired with his dedication and lifted spirits with his ever-present smile, easy laugh and endless energy...because he made them proud of who they are. Most of all, he is a hero to countless patients whose lives were saved through his artful and gifted delivery of care...because they are here. Thank you, Jay. You will always be a treasured gift to us all.

In our teens Jay and Freddie Duracher were best friends....both are gone now and i cant stop thinking Heaven will be a lot more fun now that they are reunited....Jay was always an all around great guy. I have not been in touch with jay for many years now but remember his charm and wit as though we never lost touch....To the days at the Shed...as a Munga Hunga..(lol) ...and the times at the Warehouse...to just great weekends at the Lakefront....he will always bring a smile to my face when i think of him.......my condolences to his family....
Melanie & family, I am so very sorry! I hate to hear this extremely sad news. Jay was someone that made a true difference in this world through his sheer love of life. I enjoyed 18 years of working with him on numerous projects and will forever remember his passion and devotion to his family, his friends and coworkers, and of course, his patients. His smile would light up every room he entered and his laugh was contagious. His jitters and nervous energy would make me tired at times. It seemed that his body just couldn't contain his enthusiasm! :) He will be remembered with great fondness and respect. Please know my thoughts, prayers, and love are with you!
Love, Sherri Hayes
Jay...Jay...Jay, I consider it an honor for our paths to have crossed. It was a pleasure working in the ED with you for all those years. I can't ever remember seeing you angry, instead you were always cool, calm and collective. You and Mel are like family to me. North Oaks, especially the ED will never be the same without you. You left some big shoes to fill. I will truly miss you. Melanie, if you need me for anything, I'm just a phone call away....Love You
