Janina "Nina" Schulz Jones' Obituary
Janina (Nina) Schulz Jones passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at the age of 93 at the family home for 51 years in Mandeville, La. Nina was born in the free city of Danzig, on the Baltic Sea. Danzig became a part of Poland after World War II, and is now known as Gdansk.
In WWII, the German army easily took Danzig in 1939, then invaded Poland, and then moved into Russia. Being a strategic port city used by the Germans, Danzig was heavily bombed by the allies, causing heavy damage, casualties and death.
The German army was stopped by the Russians at Stalingrad, and after several years of fighting, the Russian army moved back westward towards Danzig. To avoid capture by the Russians, Nina, her mother and younger sister Renate and many others, evacuated Danzig, on a maverick overcrowded train which lurched westward sometimes under Russian fire, toward Göttingen, Germany which became controlled by American forces.
After graduating from high school in Göttingen, Nina attended dental school in Munich, Germany, but left to become a successful fashion model in Europe.
Nina was married in 1957, 68 years ago, to William J. (Bill) Jones, Jr. who survives her. Nina, through the then German consulate, fostered German/American relations, and in 1960, Mayor Chep Morrison, and the New Orleans City Council, made Nina a honorary citizen of New Orleans for her guidance of German industrialists through the city.
Nina and Bill have one daughter, Samantha Jones Cohen, who has four boys, Joshua (25), Noah (22), Jonathan (21) and Nathaniel (17) Cohen. Nina’s sister, Renate Sessler and Nina’s parents, Kurt and Johanna Schulz, predeceased Nina. Renate is survived by her husband Gerhard Sessler.
Nina is also survived by her nieces, Cornelia Sessler and Christina Miculka, and by her nephew, Gunther Sessler, all of whom were born in New Jersey, but have lived in Darmstadt and Wiesbaden, Germany, for many years. Nina is also survived by the children of her nieces and nephews, all of whom live in Germany.
Nina was a warm, compassionate, talented, independent spirit, with great artistic taste, who was loyal to, and supportive and protective of, her friends and family. She made the world brighter, and she will be forever remembered.
