James Frederick Roth PhD's Obituary
James Frederick Roth, PhD, born on September 9, 1949, in New Orleans, Louisiana, died peacefully at home in Covington, Louisiana, on May 9, 2026, surrounded by his family and dogs.
Jim was the husband of Rebecca “Becky” Roth and the loving father of Jennifer Cozad, Allison Hayward, and Shana Hayward. He was the father-in-law of Jeremy Cozad and a proud grandfather to Audrey Cozad and Vincent Costa. He leaves behind his siblings, Brian, Kathleen “Kit”, Camors “Chris” Roth, and Alice “Sister” Morgan, and was preceded in death by his siblings, Yvonne Gelpi and Richard Roth Jr., and his parents, Richard and Alice Roth. He was also dearly loved by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and former students.
A lifelong learner, Jim touched countless lives through his work as an educator, coach, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jim was truly one of a kind.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Jim was a proud graduate of De La Salle High School. He continued his education at Centenary College before earning advanced degrees from the University of Arkansas and ultimately completing his PhD at Louisiana State University.
Jim dedicated more than 43 years to education, devoting his life to inspiring and uplifting young people through his inventive, resourceful, and joyful approach to teaching. Education was in his blood and stamped on his heart. Throughout his distinguished career, he taught at Sacred Heart, Stuart Hall, and later spent 23 years at Lyon Elementary School in Covington. In 2014 he retired from his career as the “Dr. of Physical Education (PE)”. Jim believed deeply in the potential of every child and was known for his wisdom, humor, and unwavering care. Beyond the classroom, he was a coach and steadfast advocate for the educational community through both his work and service.
A faithful and active parishioner of St. Peter Catholic Church, Jim lived his faith through service and quiet strength. His spirituality guided the way he cared for his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
Jim also owned and operated Southern Cross Labradoodles alongside his wife, Becky, for more than 20 years, where together they lovingly raised Australian Labradoodles and connected countless families with furry companions. A familiar sight in downtown Covington, Jim could often be spotted in his signature fedora, walking his dogs or enjoying a sunset ride in his golf cart with his furry co-pilot. Quick with a smile, a joke, and always ready for the next adventure, Jim brought warmth and humor wherever he went, leaving an unforgettable mark on the community.
Jim’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he shaped, the lessons he taught, the kindness he gave so freely. His family finds comfort knowing he peacefully completed a life beautifully lived surrounded by love. He will be missed and cherished always. We will see you on the other side, Jimmy.
