James Wylie Mitchell's Obituary
James Wylie Mitchell passed away peacefully, at the age of 79, on Sunday, August 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on July 27, 1945 to Lawrence Douglas and Edna Viola Mitchell.
Jim attended Baton Rouge High School, class of 1963, where he was a guard on the offensive line for the football team. He then went on to major in Business at Louisiana State University, class of 1968.
He served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam conflict and was an Expert Marksman. After discharge from military service, he went on to have a lifetime career in public service as a Director of Human Resources, working with the Louisiana Department of Justice, the Louisiana Department of Corrections, the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC), the cities of Houston and Victoria, Texas and Houston Community College.
Jim was a devoted fan of the LSU Tigers. He was a detailed story-teller, he loved music, especially Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett. Jim was an ardent supporter of the World War II Museum, participating as a sponsor in its earliest days as the D-Day Museum. He enjoyed military history and was an avid reader. He dearly loved his cocker spaniel, Coco. He will be missed every day by the ones who loved him most.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Douglas Mitchell and Edna Viola Wilson Mitchell and his first wife Theresa Lynn Mitchell.
James is survived by his wife, Christine LaRoche Mitchell, and his children, Jeffrey Michael Mitchell and Kelly Mitchell Stahls (Paul). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jelani, Jordyn, Javin, Virginia, Foster and Charles; two great grandchildren, Taytum and Karsyn and his two goddaughters, Casey Hendry Horne and Katie Elizabeth Kennedy.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at 2:00 PM at St. Joseph Abbey, 75376 River Road, St. Benedict, LA. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM until service time. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery.
