James Albert Freeman's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Albert Freeman, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, on October 25, 2023.
Born on December 4, 1938, in Bloomington, Indiana, the son of James Andrew Freeman and Ruth Leona (Ashton) Freeman, James lived a vibrant life of 84 years, touching the lives of countless individuals with his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering spirit.
James, often known as "Jim" to his friends and family, graduated from Bethlehem High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1956. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1960, both in the U.S. and in Germany. He also attended Indiana University where he played on the football team and also studied at Ball State University. He married his wife Suzanne Freeman on November 24, 1961, and they remained married for nearly 62 years until his passing.
James worked for the General Motors Corporation at the Guide Lamp/Fisher Guide plant in Anderson, Indiana, from 1963 until his retirement in 1999. James was also a member of the Freemason Lodge in Muncie, Indiana, for over 50 years. After his retirement, James and his wife continued to live in Anderson while spending part of the year in the Tampa, Florida area.
James was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time in nature, going on fishing trips in his bass boat, kayaking trips, and hunting trips in the mountains of Pennsylvania and the hills of southern Indiana. In his leisure he enjoyed watching college and professional football on TV and playing pinochle at family gatherings. He seemed to have an endless supply of jokes and delighted in making people laugh.
James is survived by his wife Suzanne Morris Schenck Freeman; his children Lynly Ann Horine (John) of Lafayette, Indiana, Bryan Jacob Sirtosky of Bloomington, Indiana, and Joyce Freeman Cambas (Frank) of Covington, Louisiana; his grandchildren George Horine (Stephanie), Jonathan Horine (Betsy), Jennifer Horine, Liam Cambas, and Lilly Cambas; and his great-grandchildren Jack, Violet, Henry, and Miles Horine. He is also survived by his brothers Richard Freeman (Susie) of Daleville, Indiana, Michael Freeman (Marcy) of Hood River, Oregon, Jeffrey Freeman (Denice) of Land O Lakes, Florida, and Craig Freeman (Diane) of Leesburg, Florida, as well as other extended family members. James was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Timothy Freeman (Pam) and Todd Freeman.
James’ family and friends will forever remember the countless family gatherings, holidays, and celebrations where laughter and love were in abundance. James has left a void in our lives that can never be filled, but he has also left behind a legacy of love, compassion, and strength that will continue to inspire and guide us.
A memorial service to celebrate James' life will be held on Saturday, December 30, from 12 to 3pm, at Congress Street United Methodist Church in Lafayette, Indiana.
