James P. Carter, M.D.'s Obituary
Dr. James Puckette "Jim" Carter, died peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at the age of 80.
He was the beloved husband of Carolyn Harris-Carter and the loving father of James, Jr., Rebecca, and Geoffrey and his wife Sarah. James was the cherished grandfather of Evan, Elias and Casey Carter. Jim is also survived by his elder brother Morris Carter, his niece Dorian Carter, and his former wife Gena Hunter Carter as well as other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Ruth Puckette Carter and Dr. Morris Carter and his sister, Ruth Carter.
Jim was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and his Doctor of Medicine degrees from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He was awarded his Master of Science in Parasitology and his Doctor of Public Health degrees from Columbia University. During his long career, Jim practiced medicine and taught at Meharry College of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, Tulane University School of Medicine, and Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. After hurricane Katrina, Dr. Carter and his wife moved to Mandeville, where he was Medical Director of a private clinic in Mandeville with a focus on integrative medicine.
James was a gentle, kindhearted man who was loved by everyone who knew him. He enjoyed traveling and had visited many cities of the world, for both work and leisure. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed dancing and listening to Brazilian jazz. Dr. Carter will be missed by all of his many friends, colleagues, patients and former students.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral service at 10:30 AM on Friday, March 7, 2014 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433.
Visiting hours at the funeral home on Friday will begin at 9:30 AM. Interment at Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS will immediately follow services.
