Iva Jean Pope Younger Smith's Obituary
Iva Jean Pope Younger Smith of Mandeville, LA, passed to Eternal Life on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born in Hunt County, Texas on December 23, 1930 to the late Almon T. Pope and Pearl Clark Pope.
Jean was the loving mother of 5 children, Wesley H. Younger, Jr. (Eva), Priscilla Y. Carbo (Philip), Cynthia Y. Gendron (Paul), Philip R. Younger (Crystal) and Rebecca Y. Becnel (Randy). She was best known as “Gramsey” to her 11 Grandchildren, Wesley III, Joy, Lance, Hope, Paul II, Valerie, Alexa, Jade, John Clark, Cameron, Collin and 14 Great Grandchildren, whom she loved spending time with. She is also survived by her siblings, Dorothy, Rachel, Alta, Leon, and Jerry as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Jean is predeceased by her husbands, Wesley H. Younger, Sr., William N. Smith and her great grandchild, Joseph A. Scott. Also predeceased by her siblings, Billy, Irene, James, Betty, Jimmy, and Ella Faye.
As a loving, giving, strong independent mother, Jean aka “Boss Lady”, Ms. Jean, Momma Jean, Gramsey, was born and raised in Greenville, Texas. She has been a resident of Louisiana since 1954. Jean loved spending time with her family, friends, and watching Saints football “Who Dat”. Hot dogs, fried chicken, and popcorn were among some of her favorite foods. Jean was a business owner of Younger’s Department Store and LA Hardware and Supply, Inc. before retiring. She loved fashion and was always dressed to the nines. When she was young, she enjoyed shopping on Canal Street with her best friends Mary and Lee. She will be missed by many and loved forever.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA 70433 on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 12:00 NOON with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM until service time. Interment will follow the service at Garden of Memories, 4900 Airline Dr., Metairie, LA 70001.
