Irene Driscoll Knight's Obituary
Irene (Pat) Knight, a retired registered nurse, died at her home in Covington, Louisiana on Saturday morning, March 10, 2007.
Born in Minnesota, she has resided in Covington since 1964. Mrs. Knight graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing affiliated with Viterbro College, Lacrosse, WI.
During World War II, she served in the South Pacific with an Evacuation Hospital. She was a recipient of the Bronze Star and other military awards. After World War II, she was employed in Detroit as an industrial nurse at Ford Motor Company. Later, as a U.S. Public Health Nurse, she worked in Panama and the Panama Canal Zone.
She enjoyed fifteen years of service with the St. Tammany Parish Hospital as a staff nurse and as a nursing administrator. During her career, she was active with the American Nurses Association, the Diabetic Association, and other health groups.
After retiring, she was a charter member of the group that established Hospice of St. Tammany. She was active in the Elementary School Reading Program, and Volunteers of America.
She is survived by Thomas Knight, her husband of 60 years; her five children, Patricia Donlon of Metairie, Louisiana, Susan Carter of Covington, Louisiana, Bob Knight of Covington, Louisiana, Bill Knight of Atlanta, Georgia, and Bruce Knight of Washington, D. C. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Ryan Knight of Oakland, California, Adam Knight of Atlanta, Georgia, Tom Carter of Covington, Louisiana, and Eliece and Carter Knight of Covington, Louisiana. Survivors also include two sons-in-law, Edward Donlon and Jim Carter, two daughters-in-law, Margaret Knight and Chloe Knight, and a sister, Lores Marshall of Janesville, Wisconsin. Three brothers, Clarence, Robert and Francis Driscoll, and two sisters, Alice Ryder and Mickey Scanlon, preceded her in death.
One of her great pleasures during recent months, was the fact that the entire family was able to be together to celebrate her 60th wedding anniversary with a wonderful meal at Sal & Judy’s Restaurant.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to a Memorial Mass on Wednesday March 14, 2007 at 12:30 PM at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 West Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA 70471. Visitation will be at the chruch from 11:00 am until service time.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery, St. Benedict, LA.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to St. Tammany Parish Hospital Hospice.
