Irene Cyr's Obituary
Irene Cyr, 91, passed away March 11 at her home in Jacksonville Beach. Fl. Born to Irenee and Elodie (Pinette) Cyr, in Fort Kent, Maine in 1917, she graduated from the Georgetown University School of Nursing in Washington, DC, class of 1939. In May, 1941, Irene joined the US Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and during WWII served in the South Pacific Theater in Saipan, Maui and Oahu.
She was decommissioned with the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1946 and settled in the Chicago, Illinois area where she worked at a medical office in Skokie, earned certification as an X-ray technician and later became a nursing supervisor.
In her later years, Irene relocated to Jacksonville Beach to be close to her brother, Arthur, and family and, for the last three years, lived in Ashford Court Assisted Care Home. Arthur preceded her in death by 8 days.
Irene leaves nieces Mary Anne Hess & her husband Dave of Ponte Vedra Beach and Susan Cyr & her husband Mark Johnston of Greenville, SC and nephews Paul Cyr & wife Carla of Gig Harbor, WA and godson Richard Cyr & wife Kathy of Madisonville, LA.
A joint Memorial Service for brother and sister will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 4PM at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Ponte Vedra Beach with Monsignor Daniel Logan presiding.
Graveside Services with Military Honors will be at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Covington, LA on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 2:00 PM.
