Hezzie Elliott Thompson's Obituary
Hezzie Elliott Thompson passed away Friday, September 16, 2011. A life resident of St. Tammany Parish, he was born June 21, 1919 in Folsom, LA to the late David and Geneva Willie Thompson.
The beloved husband of Lucille Gill Stevens Thompson, he is survived by two sons, Barry Thompson (Ellouise) and Bruce Thompson (Eugenie); one step-son, Alvin Ben Stevens (Alice); one brother, Huey Thompson; one sister, Jeannette T. Davis; seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rita Harper Thompson; one step-son, Charles Wayne Stevens; one grandson, David Thompson; five brothers: Guy, Alvin, Virgil, Elzie and Emmett Thompson; one sister, Mavis Thompson and one great-grandson, Michael Thompson.
Hezzie was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the 8th Infantry Division in Europe from July 1944 through war’s end. The division was involved in the “breakout” at St. Lo, Battle of the Huertgen Forest, as well as other engagements. He was honorably discharged as 1st Sergeant and recipient of a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf cluster, a Bronze Star and CIB. Prior to his present membership at First Baptist Church of Covington, he served as Deacon at Bogue Falaya Baptist Church in Folsom. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the local chapters of the American Legion and VFW.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA 70433.
A wake is scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2011 from 5-8 PM with visiting hours at the funeral home beginning Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
Interment at the Bogue Falaya Baptist Church cemetery in Folsom will immediately follow services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Covington “Young at Heart” ministry or to St. Tammany Parish Hospital Hospice of St. Tammany.
