Henry Joseph Calato's Obituary
Henry Joseph Calato born January 16, 1924 in Independence, Louisiana and residing the last 22 years in Folsom, Louisiana, was called home to the Lord from St. Tammany Hospital in Covington, Louisiana on Tuesday, December 18.
Henry worked selflessly to care for his wife, Marjorie and to help raise over the years two special godchildren Betty Alexander and Jamie Collins. His family will miss him forever.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, and numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves behind special godchildren Betty Alexander and her husband Dennis, Jamie Collins and her spouse Jim, Sharon Calato, Amanda Ardoin, Amber Ardoin, Eric Ardoin and Abigail Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Mary Calato of Palermo, Italy; sisters Catherine Venezia, Carlene Salvaggio, and Josie Tynes; and his brothers, Sam, Louis and Tony Calato.
Henry was well-known for his efforts in the kitchen. He was the chief cook when it came to fund-raisers at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Folsom. He worked parish fairs, Knights of Columbus dinners, the I Care dinners at Thanksgiving for senior citizens and served in the bakery at St. Joseph Abbey wrapping baked bread for the poor.
Henry also served as President of St. John’s St. Vincent de Paul Society where he distributed food vouchers to those in need.
Special thanks to the staff at St. Tammany Hospital and to friends and family who made his last days more comfortable. A special thanks goes to his niece Carolyn Calato, and friends Ronnie and Fay Ponthieux, Don and Pat Mastio, and Bob and Linda Chandler who cared for him at the end.
Visitation for family will be from 9:30-10:00 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 11345 St. John Church Road, Folsom, Louisiana 70437 on Saturday December 22, 2007 and for friends from 10:00-1:00.
Father Jonathan de Frange will be the main celebrant of the Funeral Mass at 1:00 at the church. Father Peter Hammett will con-celebrate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery. A reception will be provided by the church for family and friends immediately following the services in Jonathan Hall on the church grounds.
E.J. Fieldings Funeral Home in Covington, Louisiana is in charge of arrangements.
