Helen May Schopp Ross' Obituary
Helen May Schopp Ross passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at the age of 102, a month before her 103rd birthday.
Mrs. Ross was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Louis Dumser Ross, and her dear daughter, Helen Catherine "Kay" Ross Brandt.
She was born on May 12, 1907 in New Orleans to Charles J. and Helen Brand Schopp and was the sister of Laetitia Schopp, Charles Schopp, Leonard Schopp, Althea Ross and Norbert Schopp, all of whom predeceased her.
She is survived by her devoted son, Louis D. Ross, Jr. and his wife, Betty; her adoring grandchildren and their spouses: Mary (David) Mizell, John "Jeb" (Anne) Brandt III, Laura Brandt (Lloyd) Alberts, Tina (Mark) Brantley, Joanna (Tyler) Case, Louis D. "Guy" Ross III, Felice Ross, and Paul Ross; her great-grandchildren: Paige Mizell, Meg Mizell, David "Tank" Mizell, Brian (Casey) Brandt, Caroline Brantley, Joseph Alberts, Helen and Julia Case, Elizabeth and Christian Ham and Aden Ross and one great-great grandchild, Presleigh Brandt. Her grandchildren Elizabeth Ross and Joseph Ross also predeceased her.
A native of New Orleans, Mrs. Ross was a graduate of St. Stephens High School and The Normal School, both in New Orleans. She taught grammar school in New Orleans until her marriage to Mr. Ross, at which time she moved to Covington nearly 80 years ago. During her lifetime, Mrs. Ross was very active in civic and social organizations in the Covington area. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross during World War II, was a Charter Member of both the Covington Garden Club and the Krewe of Juno carnival club, and was a member of the St. Tammany Parish Hospital Guild and the St. Peter Catholic Church Altar Society where she was a long-time parishioner.
The family extends their appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Heritage Manor in Mandeville for their dedicated care of Mrs. Ross these last six years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral mass at St. Peter Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433, on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 11:30 AM.
A wake is scheduled to take place at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433 on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 from 6-9:00 PM.
Visiting hours at the church Wednesday will begin at 10:00 AM.
Interment at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Covington will immediately follow mass.
In lieu of flowers, masses at St. Peter Catholic Church or donations to a charity of choice are preferred.
