Harrison S. Brooks, III's Obituary
Harrison Sylvester Brooks III passed away from a brain tumor at his home in Folsom Tuesday at the age of 53.
Brooks was born Jan. 28, 1953 in Alexandria, and grew up in several towns in central and southern Louisiana. Brooks graduated from Buckeye High in 1971. He was a linebacker for the Buckeye Panthers’ varsity football squad. Brooks later attended Northeastern Louisiana University in Monroe, where he met Mimi Morgan, whom he married in 1975.
He soon joined the Air Force and the couple moved from Louisiana to air bases in Texas and California. Brooks and his family lived overseas from 1977 to 1986 in England, Japan and Germany. Brooks, a Russian linguist in the Air Force, listened to Soviet pilots’ radio traffic during the Cold War, and helped Mimi raise three boys: Jacob, Morgan and Patrick. Brooks was later stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, where he retired from the Air Force. In 1995, the family moved to Folsom. While staying in Alexandria following Hurricane Katrina last September, Brooks was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. He was fond of literature, history and nature. Of the different countries Brooks lived in, he said England was his favorite. He is survived by his wife and three sons; mother Fanny Brooks of Pineville; brothers Ricky of Deltona, Fla., Robert of Oakland, Calif., Douglas of Lockport, N.Y., and Larry of Pineville; and sisters Braddie Furlow of Dry Prong, La., Cathy Riley of Willow City, N.D., and Peggy Ballard of Monticello, Miss. Brooks is preceded in death by his father Harrison Brooks II; brothers Kelly and Roland; and grandparents Lee and Selena McCann.
The public is welcome to attend a service for Brooks at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home in Covington. Visitation begins at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of St. Tammany, 1202 South Tyler St., Covington.
