Gloria Marie Cantrell McMurry's Obituary
Gloria Marie Cantrell McMurry, a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022 at the age of 93.
Born January 16, 1929, in Cisco, Texas, Gloria’s family moved frequently throughout her childhood, eventually settling down in Oklahoma City where she graduated from Classen High School. While attending Oklahoma University, as a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, she met the love of her life Chuck, who lovingly called her “Glo Baby” throughout their years together. Gloria was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She was a homemaker, active in Garden Club, Bridge Clubs, the Delta Section, Petroleum Engineers Society of New Orleans and the Pierre de Mandeville Chapter of LSDAR. She was also a member of P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization that promotes education for women, for 65 years. Gloria was also an avid golfer, which she learned from her late husband, and continued to play throughout her life.
In 1952, the family moved to Metairie, LA, raised 3 children and resided for twenty years. In 1973 Gloria and Chuck began a ten-year journey that took them to Trinidad-Tobago; Brussels, Belgium; Cairo, Egypt; and Calgary, Canada. During this time, they also enjoyed travels across South America, Europe and Africa before eventually returning and settling down in Mandeville, LA in 1982.
Gloria was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Charles “Chuck” Raymond McMurry, her son Charles “Chuck” Raymond McMurry II, and parents Walter E. and Betty Marie Long. Gloria is survived by her daughter Gloria Susan McMurry Lang, and husband Peter H. Lang; son Walter “Bud” Scott McMurry and husband David Murray; and her daughter-in-law Debbie Theriot McMurry. She is also survived by granddaughters Dana McMurry Naquin and husband Jeffery W. Naquin; Megan McMurry Shelton and husband Ryan A. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Forest Manor Nursing Home and the St. Tammany Hospice Group for their continued care of their Mom/Mimie during her time at the facility.
