George Williams Stokes' Obituary
George Williams Stokes, Sr. died at Baton Rouge General Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Thursday, October 18, 2007, after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Stokes attended Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, on a four year basketball scholarship. He was a Naval pilot during World War II. He left active duty in 1946 and retired from the Naval Reserve in 1953. He graduated from Tulane University with a BA degree. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity while at Tulane University. Upon graduation, he worked for Cities Service Oil Company in New Orleans, LA. In 1970, he began George W. Stokes Company, Inc. until his retirement in 2000.
The Stokes’ have been living in Covington Country Club Estates since 1960. He and his wife, Dorothy were married for 44 years prior to her death in 1997. They had four children, Mrs. George-Ann Stokes-Townsend, George W. Stokes, Jr., Christopher Richard Stokes and Mrs. Margaret Lee Stokes Strange. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Matthew Joseph Stokes, Elliott Ross Stokes, Mrs. McKay Lauren Guilbeau, Brent Williams Stokes, Mary Margaret Magee Strange, Clinton Michael Strange, Jr., Maggie Rose Stokes and Dorothy Magee Strange.
He was a member of Covington Country Club, a charter member of the Krewe of Olympia, Mandeville Rotary Club and a long time member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Mandeville, LA.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Celebration of Christian Burial Mass on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 312 Lafitte Street, Mandeville, LA 70448.
Visitation will begin on Wednesday AT THE CHURCH at 9:45 AM.
Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, LA.
