George Rogers Smith's Obituary
“It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home.”
Roger was born to Harry and Kathryn Smith in Winter Garden, Florida, March 28, 1931. He left his loving family in the early morning hours on Friday, May 16, 2014. The Smith family first moved to Covington in 1960 and for his wife and all but one of their six children, this is their forever home. He is survived by his wife, Harriet Anne Sipple Smith and his daughters, Jean Anne Mayhall, Holly Rogers Kennedy and Margaret Armitage Cole (Russell), and by his sons, James Sipple Smith (Susan), George Rogers Smith, Jr. (Britta), and Christopher Rogers Smith (Debbie) and by his sister, Kathy Smith Barley (Kim) of Windermere, Florida.
Roger was graduated from the University of Michigan as a naval architect and marine engineer. Roger also served in the United States Air Force. He was employed by J. Ray McDermott in New Orleans until the late 70’s when he became a real estate developer of beautiful subdivisions, all located in Mandeville, LA.
Roger was a former King of the Krewe of Olympia in Covington, a founder of the Pontchartrain Yacht Club and of the Toastmasters Club.
Eleven grandchildren were and are the pride of Roger and his wife: Michael Mayhall (Leticia), Brian Mayhall, Jay Smith (Stephanie), Shelley Stagner (Gabe), the late Matthew Terry, Michael Kennedy, Alina Smith, George Rogers Smith, III, Russell Cole, Evan Cole, and Ethan Cole.
Having lunch with his friends every Friday at Fazzios was a highlight of his life, as were his five great grandchildren, all of whom live in Dallas, TX.
We know that Roger’s love and spirit will be with us “always and forever.
