Everette Leon Stokes' Obituary
Everette Leon Stokes passed away on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007.
He was born in Mangham, LA, on Sept. 3, 1914. Parents were William Byron Stokes and Lula Brown Stokes.
Everette graduated from LSU with a B.S. degree in Economics in 1938. Employed by United Pipe Line until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Dec. 8, 1941. After attending midshipman training at Notre Dame University and Northwestern in Chicago, he was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy in Oct. 1942.
He married Maribess Temple on Feb. 7, 1943, at University Baptist Church in Baltimore MD. They had a brief honeymoon at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. He was stationed in NY until his ship was commissioned--a fleet oiler carrying highly combustible fuel. He sailed from Norfolk via the Panama Canal to join the Third Fleet in the Pacific Theater. He was on active duty through the rest of WWII and sailed into Tokyo Bay for the signing of the Peace Treaty in 1945. Everette was retired from the Navy in February 1946, having obtained rank of Lieutenant Commander. After leaving active duty, he was commanding officer of Naval Reserve Division 835 in Shreveport with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, USNR. Everette and his wife returned to Shreveport to work for United Gas. Pennzoil Inc. took control of the company in 1968, and he was transferred to Houston as Tax Manager of Oil and Gas operation. He retired from Pennzoil in 1984. Organizations he belonged to included Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Assoc., American Petroleum Institute, and Tax Executive Institute. In 1986, they moved to Mandeville to be near their daughter, Susan Rolston, and her husband Dr. Steele Rolston and 5 grandchildren: Carrie Kathleen Rolston, Laney Brice Rolston, Lauren Rolston Jacob, Brice Steele Rolston and Blake Stokes Rolston. His oldest daughter, Beverly Dawson, lives in College Station, TX with her husband, Professor Joseph G. Dawson III and grandchildren are Ashley Dawson Oliphant and Joseph Everette Dawson.

Relatives and friends of family are invited to attend funeral services on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church, l6333 Hwy. 1085, Covington 70435. Interment at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
