Esteban Garcia's Obituary
Esteban Garcia, 79, of Abita Springs, Louisiana, passed away on September 28, 2023.
He was born in Guanajuato, Mexico on December 26,1943. Esteban was preceded in death by his parents, Ponciano Garcia and Adelina Torres, and is survived by his wife, Dorothy Garcia, his siblings, Gloria, Concha, Enrique, and Chayo, son Luis, and daughter Marjorie.
As a young man, Esteban was a standout soccer player; however, he found his calling in boxing, amassing a record of 14-5 as a professional fighter before beginning his career as a teacher and trainer. Over the course of multiple decades, Esteban trained a host of world class boxers, including Roberto Duran and Hector “Macho” Camacho. His work took him around the globe, and he was renowned for his focus on technique and unique combinations of punches and defensive maneuvers. He was an innovator who will be remembered by many for his contributions to the evolution of boxing.
After moving to Mandeville, Louisiana in 1996, Esteban began using boxing training as a means of improving physical fitness for men and women of all ages and ability levels. He taught classes at several gyms throughout the Greater New Orleans area and was known for his enthusiasm and tough work ethic. He was sought out by professionals and amateurs alike who knew of his teaching skills and uplifting approach to exercise and wellness.
Esteban had a deep love for God and family, especially his beloved wife, Dorothy, his “Senora.” He was a collector and a tinkerer, and he enjoyed studying new languages. He found joy working in the yard or lounging with one of his beloved dogs.
A celebration of life will be held October 5, 2023, at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home at 2260 W 21st Ave, Covington, LA 70433. Visitation will begin at 9am with a prayer service at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Samaritan Center of St. Tammany Parish.
