At sixteen, I moved to Covington with my family, finally settling down after years of moving for my dad's oilfield maintenance job. Because church was a priority for us, we quickly found a local congregation, which is where we met Bill, SeWilla, and the five Barker girls. The Barker clan embraced us completely, fostering an instant sense of belonging. From day one, the Barkers treated us like lifelong members of their family. Though I was only in Covington for two years before heading off to college and beginning a career, I have fond memories of living in Grammy Barker’s house for a short while, eating homemade biscuits and tomato gravy after church, listening to all the antics of the Barker sisterhood, as well as attending a six-week revival that transformed the community. The gentle spirit and loving kindness SeWilla Barker nurtured in others will live on as her lasting legacy.
