Elizabeth Givens Alford's Obituary
Elizabeth Givens Alford passed away on Friday, October 17, 2008. She was born in Simsboro, LA on November 13, 1916 to the late William A. and Mary Elizabeth Gullatt Givens and was raised in Ruston, LA.
She graduated from LA Tech, continued her graduate studies at the University of Texas and began a teaching career at Pineville High School. In 1941 Elizabeth married Glenn Alford, a State Trooper in Tallulah, LA. Glenn joined the U.S. Coast Guard, twins were born and they moved to Covington where she was “drafted” as a math teacher during the war. God blessed them with four additional children and as the last was established in school, Mrs. Alford returned to teaching Advanced Mathematics at Covington High School. She sponsored the National Honor Society, Math Club and was instrumental in leading Prep Quiz Bowl students to several consecutive victories. In time she was able to fulfill her lifelong ambition to visit “Far Away Places” from Ireland to Greece and Egypt to China.
She is survived by two sons, John and Glenn, Jr.; four daughters, Nancy Kynerd, Susan Monlezun, Mary Lou Alford and Carolyn Ward; her brother, Raymond Givens; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Alford, three brothers and one sister.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 3:00 PM from the chapel at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA 70433.
Visiting hours will begin at 1:00 PM.
Interment will follow services at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Covington.
