Donald Daniel Perkins Jr.'s Obituary
Donald Daniel Perkins, Jr., age 66, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 31, surrounded by loving family, following a lengthy illness.
Don was born on July 14, 1953, in New Orleans, LA to Donald Daniel Perkins, Sr. and Mary Lou Eugene Perkins.
Don attended St. Agnes Parochial School, Jefferson Junior High School, and graduated from East Jefferson High School in Metairie, LA. Before completing his education, he served in the United States Army from 1976 until he was honorably discharged in 1979. He graduated from LSU Medical Center School of Occupational Therapy in 1985. To complete his education, he received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.
For twenty-three years, Don Served as the Department Head of Rehabilitation Services at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, LA, where he was much loved and respected by his employees and peers. Don was in charge of the Transport Department and Emergency Management at the hospital.
Don married Janice Hattox Cox on July 31, 2004, in Biloxi, MS, allowing them to blend their beloved families. Left to honor and remember Don are his children Daniel Perkins, Courtney Shaw (Jared), and William Perkins (Christina), as well as his stepchildren Allison Parker (Lee) and Emily Geigerman (Dudley); his grandchildren Avery Shaw, Harper Shaw, Beau Shaw, Eloise Perkins, Nathan Allen, and Cole Geigerman; his sisters Maureen Trott (Quillie) and Lynn Mathis; nieces Claire Trott, Mia Puleio (Jeff), and Abby Letts (Cory); and nephew Quillie Trott, Jr. (Krysten); and his former wife Michelle Perkins. In addition, he leaves many extended family members and faithful friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Edie Colvin (Ray), and his nephew Bryan Perkins.
Don had two hobbies about which he was passionate: disc golf and woodworking. He made many friends and won many tournament championships playing disc golf, even having an eighteen-basket course through his property, where he and many friends spent hours playing the sport. He was a talented woodworker, creating beautiful cutting boards and other woodcrafts in his home workshop.
Don was a devout Christian and a member of the Covington Presbyterian Church. He belonged to the Professional Disc Golf Association and the Magic City Carnival Association.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at the Covington Presbyterian Church with E.J. Fielding Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will greet friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at the church. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 p.m. Presiding will be Reverend Jeff Simms. Don’s final resting place will be at St. Patrick Cemetery No. 1 in New Orleans. Memorials for Don may be made to Covington Presbyterian Church, 222 S. Jefferson Avenue, Covington, LA 70433.
