Donald Mitchell Hollowell's Obituary
Donald Mitchell Hollowell (1927-2009) died September 11th in Covington.
A retired automobile executive, he was born in Memphis, TN to the late Herbert Lee and Aubrey Nowell Hollowell. He was a Navy veteran in World War II who served in the Asiatic Pacific at Saipan. After serving in the military he received his education in West Tennessee at Union University in Jackson, and Memphis State University in Memphis. In the mid 50’s he joined Hull-Dobbs-Oakely Ford management group, holding different positions in Memphis, Atlanta, and Knoxville. While in Knoxville he was manager and part owner of Hull Dobbs of Knoxville and Fountain City Ford. He was a member of Cedar Springs Church, Deanne Hill Country Club and Sertoma International. In 1970 he came to Metairie, Louisiana as Vice President of Metairie Ford and Honda Motor Company. He was also owner/operator of West Bank Dodge. During his business career he earned many achievement awards for leadership in sales.
After retiring to Covington, he became a member of Christ Episcopal Church serving as a greeter for the past ten years. He continued to serve his community during his retirement as a volunteer at New Heights Therapy Center for Handicapped children. Sharing endless stories and jokes with sharp wit and timing, he was more of an entertainer than a volunteer at Hadden Hall Senior Center and St. Tammany Parish Hospital until his recent illness. He led a very active life, and walked everday through the streets of old Covington.
He leaves his devoted wife Bettye Bonds Hollowell; two daughters, Donna Hollowell Dugas (her husband Earl James Dugas) and Dianne Hollowell Miskell (her husband James Donald Miskell); five grandchildren: Ashley Elizabeth Dugas, Aimee Dugas Plauche (her husband Michael Scott Plauche), Justin Michael Dugas, Scott Mitchell Miskell and Megan Mc Laughlin Miskell. He is also survived by one great grandson, Mitchell Rue Plauche.
A private memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Chapel in Covington at a later date.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or St. Tammany Parish Hospital.
