Donald "Donnie" Jack Simmons' Obituary
Donald “Donnie” Jack Simmons passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025. He was born in New Orleans, LA on November 14, 1942.
He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa Bonomo Simmons; six children, Donald “Jay” Simmons (Jeannie), Christine Savarese Hulin (Avery), Shannon Simmons O’Bryant (John), John Savarese (Racquel), Troy Savarese (Amy), Jamie Savarese and his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Jeannette Schiro, nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leona Stevens Simmons and Jack Simmons; his older brother Donald Jack Joseph Simmons, his sister Gloria Simmons Bauer, and his son Jason Michael Savarese.
Donnie was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the 1st Battalion 27th Infantry, 66-67, Wolfhounds.
He was a member of the IBEW Local 130 Union where he recently received his 55 year service pin.
He moved to the Northshore from the Chalmette area in the late seventies where he made a home with his family for over 45 years. Many will remember him from his years on the football fields, baseball fields and basketball courts coaching the local Lee Road teams, boys and girls. He loved to make people laugh and they loved him for it. He was known for his warmth, humor, and support. He was a family oriented, God-loving man who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
