Don Gregory Stein's Obituary
Don Gregory Stein, 73, died January 4, 2021, with his wife and three daughters by his side.
Don was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 4, 1947 and resided in Madisonville, Louisiana. He graduated from Covington High School in 1965. In October of 1967 he married Diane Taylor Stein and began working for the St. Tammany Parish Assessor’s Office. In 1975 he moved to the city of Covington and continued to work until retiring in 1999. After a brief retirement, he went back to work for the Assessor’s Office for ten additional years. Don was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church. He enjoyed his weekly routine of Monday morning money counting, 5 o’clock adoration on Thursday and 4 o’clock mass on Saturday, and going out to eat afterward, of course. Sundays were spent enjoying lunch with family, where his plate was full of every dessert choice, ice cream filling the cracks in between. Wednesdays were spent with the casino crew; oh, to be a fly on the wall. Mardi Gras season was his favorite time, and, on Fat Tuesday, he paraded through downtown Covington with the Krewe of KaaCee. Labor Day weekends you could find him with his feet in the sand; Seaspray will always be his home away from home. Regardless of the day, Don was a devoted family man, full of life and love. He knew just how to bring a smile to your face and had no problem “telling you like it was.” He will be sorely missed and his memory will be cherished by many.
Don is survived by his wife, Diane Stein; three daughters, Dionne Stein Thigpen (Greg), Ashley Stein Jakins (Bo), and Stephanie Stein Blow (Scotty); 5 grandchildren, Meghan (Jason), Taylor, Brooke, Braydon, and Barron; and 1 great-grandchild, Rhett; sisters, Diane Graham and Faith Cooper; brothers Joe Stein and David Stein; sisters-in-law, Margaret Stein, Susie Stein, and Claudia Stein.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Irvin Michael Stein, Sr.; his mother, Marjorie Pelloat Stein; brother, Irvin “Mickey” Stein, Jr., brothers-in-law, James Graham and Carlos Cooper.
