A memory note to All Geles.....At my age the obituraries are the first part of the paper I read. I am sorry for the untimely passing of Damian and would like to pass along a little Gele history that all of you missed (before you were born.) When Anna and Charles were first married, in the late forties, I believe, Charles worked with Corps of Engineers and was my father's clerk at the begining of construction of the Morganza Floodway system. They lived in Morganza and we, just uprooted from the Mississippi Delta, lived in New Roads about ten miles away. There were very few way to pass your free time there then. My father and Charles decided to play tennis. There were only five tennis courts in the parish, and three of those belonged to people we hadn't even met yet. New Roads had two public courts and Morganza had one the priest had built immediately behind the church. There were about three other men their age who played with them..the people who owned the private courts were too old to play tennis and they were never used. We spent many weekends at the courts and lots of long weekday evenings too. Anna would visit with my mother. I was about eleven then, and was allowed to substitute when someone didn't show. Charles kept everyone laughing most of the time. Later they were living in Plaqumine and we would visit them there. I remember seeing Christmas cards from Gentilly later on but after that they just disappeared from our lives. They were the first native New Orleanians we had ever met and I was sure that place would be fun if I ever got there. I will never forget those Geles. May the dynasty they apparently founded go on forever.......Oliver S Robinson,[email protected]
