Dale Allen Padgett's Obituary
Dale Allen Padgett, 74, of Covington, LA, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson, LA. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Wanda Lowery Padgett; his daughter, Shannon Mikell; his son-in-law, Stephen Mikell; his granddaughter, Emma Mikell; and his grandson, Ethan Mikell.
Born in Battle Creek, MI, the son of Michael and Bernice Padgett, he was one of four brothers. He was preceded in death by his brother, Don. Dale is survived by his brothers, David (Millie) of Maitland, FL, and Doug (Ada) of Hayesville, NC.
Some of the things Dale loved most were boats and being on the water. From 1970 to 1974, Dale served in the United States Coast Guard. After his active duty, he remained in the Coast Guard Reserves for 18 years. He graduated from the University of West Florida and became a teacher in Pace, FL, impacting the lives of his young students for 26 years. For most of his career, Dale taught Industrial Arts, often known as “wood shop,” to 8th graders. Teaching middle schoolers to use power tools requires both a calm spirit and a sense of humor, and Dale had both. Favorite projects from his class included orange juice can pinhole cameras, rockets, and wooden clocks. Mr. Padgett always had numerous “outstanding students.”
In 2008, Dale and Wanda moved from Florida to Louisiana to be near their grandchildren. Life in Covington revolved around family, friends, and church. As a loving husband, Dale was faithful and affectionate. As a father, he possessed a sense of humor and fun, which was only surpassed by his patience and kindness. As a grandfather, he joyfully attended innumerable ballet recitals, soccer games, and music lessons. He loved his “Emma doll”. The two often went on long drives together, sometimes pausing for cream-filled donuts or a cup of tea. He had regular “business lunches” with his grandson, Ethan, at Taco Bell and Arby’s, but we suspect they conducted more mischief than business.
Finding a home at First Baptist Church of Covington, Dale faithfully served as deacon, Bible study teacher, volunteer at Celebrate Recovery and went to India twice on mission trips. Dale was known for his gentle demeanor, cheerfulness, kindness, and enduring patience. His compassion and willingness to serve others made him easy to love and a joy to be around. He had a smile for everyone and rarely complained even in suffering. His warmth was palpable, and his faith was evident in all he did. Dale embodied Proverbs 15:1, always having a “gentle answer.” The world is a little less bright because of his passing, but his legacy of faith and joy continues in those he loved.
Our heartfelt gratitude is extended to the cardiac failure team, LVAD coordinators, the staff, nurses, and therapists of the SICU 10th floor at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson, LA. Special thanks are extended to Dale’s surgeon, Dr. Aditya Bansal for his care and friendship. The family can never express their appreciation for the exceptional care that Dale received during his six months in the hospital.
Relatives and friends are invited to the Memorial Service at the Chapel at First Baptist Covington, 16054 Murphy Rd., Covington, LA 70433 on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 11:00 AM with visitation from 10:00 AM until service time.
