Charlie was a very special person who meant so much to our family. My husband Bob (Robert Morgan) served as Chair of the Board of St. Paul Elementary School and loved working with him. The work Charlie did at St. Paul's raised the standards, enriched the curriculum. and elevated St. Paul's standing in the community. Our son, Matthew, bloomed under his tutelage and began his life-long passion with computers when only in third grade at St. Paul's. St.Paul's was one of the first elementary schools to establish a computer laboratory. The children was not merely "users." Matthew's first task was to master the keyboard (typing), and then to write programs using Basic, and he was only 8. He now is a computer scientist working in Silicon Valley and attributes his success to St. Paul's under the leadership of Charlie Hemenway.
Two of our other sons had the good fortune to be at Country Day when Charlie was Assistant Headmaster. When he left to go to Aspen, we were disappointed. Matt was fortunate enough to be ready to go to school when Charlie become headmaster at St. Paul's. We had no hesitation in enrolling him there, knowing Charlie was leading the faculty.
We visited St. Paul's on the occasion of Charlie's retirement before the devastation of Katrina and were amazed at the extent of the physical plant when there.
May your heart cherish the good he accomplished as an educator, and the positive effect he had on so many children.
Sincerely,
Argiro Morgan
