He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Anita Marie St. Julien; four children, Charles U. Porche III, Carlon Mangrum (Philip), Charlon Porche, and Corey Porche; ten grandchildren, Baileigh Murray (Alex), Chelsey Porche, Zachary Mangrum, Camren Porche, Chandler Mangrum, Greyson Mangrum, Claudia Porche, Evangeline Honeycutt, Carson Porche, and Jules Porche; four great-grand children Presley Mangrum, Jameson Murray, Sophia Garcia, and Cainsley Black; seven siblings, Myrtle Lecompte (Ricky), Eris Porche (Ann), Germaine Niederer (Jed), Corine Porche, Gerry Porche, Leonard Porche (Jennifer), and Charlene Bernal (Chris); countless nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and numerous extended family and friends.
Charles was born in New Orleans and raised in Lafayette, La. He married his childhood sweetheart, Anita, in 1965 before heading to his post in Quantico, Va., where they had their first three children in the following 4 years. He served in the US Navy and was deployed to Vietnam as a Navy Corpsman, serving on the USS Repose. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Charles entered into the oil and gas industry with Humble Oil (ExxonMobil). Charles spent 30 years with Exxon, listening, learning, and leading, finishing his tenure as Operations Superintendent for the Eastern Production Division. Charles was one of the last of his kind; educated on the job, leading engineers with advanced degrees due to his knowledge and years of experience. After retirement, he returned to work as a consultant for another 15 years before trying his hand at real estate. Charles enjoyed giving his time and talent to volunteer for others through organizations like the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, the Knights of Columbus, and the VFW. He did a lot for his fellow Veterans, especially those without the support of their own families. He was a Veterans’ Court Mentor, a staunch supporter and frequent visitor to the SELA War Veterans Home, and known to attend funerals at the Veterans Cemetery in Slidell after finding out there would be no family present to honor a fellow Veteran. He received the Louisiana Honor Medal from the Louisiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Charles and Anita spent years traveling the US on motorcycles with fellow members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and cruising in their corvette with the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club. His happy place was being surrounded by his family. Charles is the bedrock of his family and will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and Poppy.
