Carey Turner Mackie's Obituary
Carey Turner Mackie peacefully departed this life on Friday evening, April 12, 2024 in Mandeville, La. She was predeceased by her parents, Louis Key Turner and Mary Josephine Bryant Turner, both of McLean Co., Ky. and later Monroe, La. She is survived by her daughter Mary Mackie Ramirez and husband Robert Bradley Ramirez of Covington, son Richard Glenn Mackie of Dallas; by her grandchildren Camille Alexandra Mackie of Austin, John Prescott Mackie of Seattle, and Sarah Isabelle Mackie of Dallas; and by her nephew Thomas Sutherland Mackie (Liesbeth) and niece Elizabeth Mackie Pinney (Reese).
Born on January 24, 1940 and raised in Monroe, Mrs. Mackie graduated from The Cassidy School in Oklahoma City and attended H. Sophie Newcomb College where she was a member of the tennis team and Chi Omega sorority. After her marriage to Richard Dale Mackie ended and she finished raising their children, she returned to Newcomb College and earned a degree in Art History.
Mrs. Mackie was an expert in early American silver with a specialty in 18th and 19th century New Orleans silver. She was the co-author of Crescent City Silver and co-editor of the Index of New Orleans Silversmiths, wrote numerous articles published in national and international antiques and decorative arts journals, and frequently gave lectures at the Winterthur Museum and for other museums and historical societies throughout the country. A life-long balletomane, she served on the board of directors of Ballet Hysell/New Orleans Ballet and appeared in many roles for the company. She was appointed by Gov. Mike Foster to the Design Council for the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion, a position in which she continued to serve under governors Blanco, Jindal, and Edwards.
A Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church in New Orleans, where Mrs. Mackie was a devoted parishioner. Burial took place at St. Joseph’s Abbey in St. Benedict, La.
