Capt. Michael E. Rooney, age 53, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at his home in Covington, LA. He was the son of Rosette Valudos Rooney and the late Emmett A. Rooney
Michael was the beloved husband of Tammy Shows Rooney and the loving father of Renee’ Rooney, Shawn R. Barnes (Brandon), Maicey Rooney, and Bethany Rooney. He was the proud grandfather of 3 grandchildren: Joseph Rooney, Alcee’ Rooney and Serena Barnes. Michael was the brother of Victoria Hendricks. Son-in-law of Captain and Mrs. Henry G. Shows, Jr. Father-in-law of Jason Poinecot.
He was born in Baton Rouge, LA and was a resident of Covington, LA for 9 years. Michael served in the United States Marine Corps and fought in the first Gulf War. He was proud to work as a ship pilot in south Louisiana for 12 years. He was President of the New Orleans Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association. Served on the Louisiana Pilotage Fee Commission; Louisiana Water Resources Commission; World Trade Center Transportation Committee; Maritime Pilots Institute Board of Directors; Louisiana Association of Business and Industry Trade; Tourism and Transportation Council; Louisiana River Pilots Association; Lower Mississippi River Waterways Safety Advisory Committee; Big River Coalition; Baton Rouge Area Maritime Safety Council; American Pilots Association (APA) - Gulf Coast - Louisiana Regional Vice President; Maritime Navigation Safety Association; and the Port Safety Council. He was an avid Auburn Tiger and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Liturgy of the Word on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 2:00 PM at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA 70433. Visitation will be held from 12 Noon until service time. Interment will follow services in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
