Bettye Bonds Hollowell's Obituary
Bettye Bonds Hollowell, widow of Donald Mitchell Hollowell, passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at her home in Covington, LA. Born May 23, 1928 the daughter of Adelaide Butler Bonds and Samuel Jones Bonds, she was preceded in death by her sister - Peggy Barton Irwin. Bettye had a vibrant and joyous spirit, forever smiling as the eternal optimist on a relentless search for the good in everything. A generous and loving mother of two daughters - Donna Hollowell Dugas (Earl James) and Dianne Hollowell Miskell (James Donald); she is survived by five grandchildren – Ashley Elizabeth Dugas, Aimee Dugas Plauche (Michael Scott), Justin Michael Dugas (Renee Redmond), Scott Mitchell Miskell and Megan McLaughlin Miskell; three great grandchildren – Mitchell Rue Plauche, Pierce Michael Plauche and Caroline Charbonnet Dugas; one niece; three great nieces; one great nephew; and two great-great nieces.
A native of Memphis, TN, Bettye graduated from Central High School and studied piano at Memphis’ DeShazes College of Music. She received her higher education from Union University in Jackson, TN. Don’s career as an executive in the automobile industry brought them to live in numerous cities around the South. Bettye was a dedicated parishioner at Atlanta’s Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, as well as Knoxville’s Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. She was active at the Deane Hill Country Club and was one of the West Hills 10 o’clock Gardeners of Knoxville, TN. She served on the Session with John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Metairie, LA for two four-year terms, belonged to “The Book Club”, Earn and Learn Investment Club, and held a Real Estate License with Stan Weber for a short time. After moving to Covington they joined Christ Episcopal Church where she served the Newcomer’s Committee and for many years as a greeter with her husband. Bettye was the founder of “Book Talk” book club, and the 20th anniversary was celebrated in September, 2014 with a luncheon at her home. Bettye found very rewarding work at the Jefferson House in Covington for 15 years, ten of which she spent coordinating the Bridal Registry. She often said “I Love My Brides!”
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 S. New Hampshire St., Covington, LA on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Christ Episcopal Church or to St. Tammany Parish Hospital Foundation.
