Brother Amedy Lewis (James Thomas) Canty's Obituary
Brother Amedy Lewis (James Thomas) Canty passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024. He was born in Galveston, Texas on August 17, 1927.
As a De La Salle Christian Brother for 80 years, Br. Tom served in schools in Louisiana (New Orleans, New Iberia, Franklin, and Covington), Texas (San Antonio), and New Mexico (Santa Fe) before retiring in Covington, LA in 2012. His caring and kind presence, and quick sense of humor, brought joy to others.
He is survived by his beloved nieces who recently visited him, Margaret Canty, Carol (and Roger) Brants, and Deborah (and James) Ables, as well as other relatives, and wonderful lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Louella Canty; and siblings Stephen Canty and Elisabeth (Canty) Woolf.
He will be missed by the Brothers and all others who knew and loved him. We would like to thank, particularly, the healthcare, cooking, and custodial staff who cared For Br. Tom at St. Paul’s, as well as the hospice staff during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Brother Thomas may be made to the St. La Salle Auxiliary, 917 S. Jahncke Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 are appreciated.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at the Brothers Residence at St. Paul School, 917 S. Jahncke Avenue, Covington LA 70433 on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 11:00 AM with visitation at the chapel on Saturday beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery.
