Brother Alfred Baltz, FSC of the San Francisco New Orleans District of the De La Salle Christian Brothers passed away on September 9, 2020, at the St. Paul's Christian Brothers Retirement Home in Covington, LA. He was 97 years of Read Obituary
Brother Alfred was my Physics teacher back in the 1980’s. He was such a patient and thoughtful man, that he taught us so much more about life than just Physics. He is the reason that I became a Civil Engineer. He will truly be missed and was one of the blessings that God out on this earth!!
A gentle, saintly man was the Brother Alfred I knew and loved. I was blessed to know Br. Alfred while I was a student at St. Paul’s College from 1952 to ‘61. Br. Alfred was at St. Paul’s from 1954-’58. My time with him was unique in that I never had him as a teacher but rather knew him from my time spent with him at my Dad’s fishing camp in Dulac, LA.
I really got to know Br. Alfred as that same gentle, saintly man while I served as Alumni Director from 2008 – 2011. He was a regular at our monthly alumni - breakfast gatherings. We visited frequently talking about old times and what being a Christian Brother meant to him. I will be forever grateful for his helping me grow closer to God.

I graduated from what was then Saint Paul's College in 1959. Brother Alfred was our senior class homeroom teacher. He was an exceptional role model both in the classroom and out. I am forever grateful for his help during some difficult times my senior year. We were especially close, going fishing and duck hunting a number of times. Over the years we stayed in touch via Christmas cards and letters. Whenever I returned to Louisiana, fellow classmates would gather and we would take Brother Alfred out to lunch or dinner. Our last meeting with him was in September 2018 when we celebrated his 96th birthday at the Brothers residence. We were planning a celebration this September for his 98th birthday when we learned of his death. I am very unhappy we didn't get to meet with him one more time. He was a wonderful human being who will be missed immensely.

As a child I grew up in the Baltz family home in Pocahontas, Arkansas. We always loved it when Brother Arthur came to visit for any family celebration or funeral. He was so sweet and loving, and always remembered all his cousins and extended family who came to visit with him. He was a very special person, who was always at home with everyone. Brother Alfred and his Brother (Brother Ralf) taught me what a Christian Brothers dedication to Christ, Education & St.Pauls School means. I was fortunate to have Brother Alfred as a teacher, but more importantly as a friend. I will miss deeply the positive lessons this man taught me about living with Christ. He “walked the talk” and made me know there is a heaven above.
Brother Alfred please put in a good word for me cause a still need help! The Christian values you taught me are being passed daily onto my extended family to include 11 grandchildren with 5 SPS & 6 SSA hopefuls. Love you Brother Alfred. (Mike Dugger’73)
I taught with Brother Alfred at Cathedral-Carmel in Lafayette. He truly was a kind person and dedicated to his calling as a teacher and friend. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Brother Alfred was a delightful teacher, role model, and person whom I had the pleasure of encountering as a junior-high student at Cathedral-Carmel High School in the mid 70s. Years later, I ran into him at a St. Paul's Homecoming Football game with my husband, and, amazingly, Br. Alfred remembered me, What an incredible loss for those who knew him.
