Charles L. O'Brien's Obituary
Charles L. O’Brien died peacefully on Saturday, December 13, 2008 surrounded by family. He was born on August 10, 1924 in New Orleans to the late William and Mary Johnston O’Brien and was a resident of Covington for over 50 years.
He graduated from St. Joseph Seminary High School in June 1940 and from Tulane University Phi Beta Kappa in 1950. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alyce O’Brien; his children and their spouses: Christine and Bill Lozes, Betsy O’Brien, Michael O’Brien, David and Lillian O’Brien, and John Preble; grandchildren: Wesley and Chris O’Brien, Andrew and William Preble, Maegan and Sean O’Brien, and Brian and Allison Lozes; and one great-granddaughter, Sonia O’Brien. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Edward O’Brien, and by his daughter Ann O’Brien.
Charlie was a licensed real estate broker; Louisiana State Certified General Appraiser, and a long-time member of the St. Tammany, Louisiana and National Associations of Realtors. He served as a director and regional vice-president of the Louisiana Association of Realtors, and as the president of the St. Tammany Board of Realtors. He was selected as Ethics Committee Chairman and Realtor of the Year by the St. Tammany Association of Realtors. He qualified as an expert real estate appraiser in many state courts and was a panelist and lecturer for real estate appraisal issues.
Charlie participated actively in the Catholic Church. He was awarded the medal of the Order of St. Louis by Archbishop Hannan on May 2, 1976. He served on the St. Peter Parish School Board in 1989 and was an honorary member of the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus and a frequent lector and volunteer at St. Peter Catholic Church. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the memorial mass on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 2:00 PM at St. Peter Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433.
Visitation at the church will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow mass at St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery.
