Irene is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 43 years, David Meeks Thompson, Jr.; siblings, Joe Keith Yates, Doris Yates Stafford, and Kenneth Yates. Irene graduated from Carson High School in Carson, MS and then went to study Cosmetology in Prentiss, MS. She worked in the cosmetology field for 18 years in Mississippi. After moving to Mobile, AL, she changed careers to Full Charge Book Keeping for the next 25 years until retirement in 2002. In 1959 Irene met the love of her life, David Thompson. They married in 1961 going on to have two daughters, Tina and Becky. Later in years they were blessed to gain two sons, Tom Mundle and Eric Haag and often spoke of how their family was now complete. Irene was a member of United Methodist Church in Carthage, MS. When she moved to Mobile, AL she became a member of Grace United Methodist Church. With her final move to Mandeville, LA she became a member of St Timothy Methodist Church. Irene loved to read, cook, go on walks and shopping. She was passionate about her faith, her family, being a caretaker for all, and being a MawMaw. Irene (MawMaw) absolutely loved spending time with her grandchildren and was always looking forward to their visits and calls. She was anxiously awaiting the arrival of her first great grandchild, Avery Claire Mundle. The family would like to thank the care team of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, patient care attendants and chaplain of St Tammany Hospital along with her long time oncologist, Dr. James Carinder for the excellent care and compassion Irene received during her years of care and most recent days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, 1203 South Tyler Street, Covington, LA 70433, https://marybird.org/location/covington/. Irene will be laid to rest in a small graveside service for close friends and family in attendance at Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS on Monday March 21, 2022 at 12:30 PM.
