Carlos E. Hernandez

April 19, 1948 - May 6, 2022

Carlos E. Hernandez was called home to our Heavenly Father on Friday, May 6, 2022, in Covington, Louisiana. Born on April 19, 1948, in San Salvador, El Salvador to Cayetano and Adelina Hernandez, he later immigrated to the United States in 1963 at the young age of 15, with three nickles in his pocket. At the age of 16, he began making Mardi Gras costumes with his mother and continued for 41 years for various crews and clubs, including Thoth, Endymion, and Orpheus. He was a graduate of Warren Easton High School and Delgado Community College. Although Carlos grew up in New Orleans, he was a resident of Harvey, Louisiana for the past 43 years. Carlos is a veteran of the Vietnam War where he earned several medals including a Presidential Unit Citation, three Bronze Stars, an Air Medal and an Army Commendation. After being honorably discharged, he furthered his education and worked 27 years in chemical refining industries as a Mechanical Draftsman. He then went on to work 4 years for Durr Construction and 6 years for the U.S. Navy as an Environmental Specialist before retiring. Carlos was the beloved husband of Mabel Hernandez for over 50 years and the loving father of Sarah Pertuit (Daniel) and Charles Hernandez (Leslie). He was also the proud grandfather of Gavin Pertuit, Jenna Pertuit, Julian Guzman, Caycin Hernandez, Jocelyn Hernandez, Colston Hernandez, Peyton Pertuit and Garrett Pertuit. Carlos was the second youngest of eight children: Manuel Hernandez, Rosa Foster, Pedro Hernandez, Julio Hernandez, Antonio Hernandez, Salvador Hernandez and Carmen Theriot. As a devout Catholic, Carlos served St. John Bosco Parish, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Council 01905), for many years. He loved cooking for and serving his fellow parishioners – his barbeque chicken and fried fish will be missed! Carlos was an extremely family oriented, loving, kind, caring and loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. In his leisure time, he enjoyed family gatherings, fishing, golf, LSU and the Saints. Carlos was well respected and liked; and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 West 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 on Friday, May 13, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
