My second cousin Russell and I spent many hours crabbing, hunting, swimming, and fishing in Lake Pontchartrain when we were in high school. We'd get up at 4am and get hauled by Burt Forsch to Greens Point with a scoop net and pirogue. We'd walk all the way back to Mandeville scooping crabs along the shore in inlets until lunch time. We were paid 5 cents for hard crabs and 25 cents for soft shells.
We roomed together for several semesters at SLU. During that time we would make extra money crawfishing in the Madisonville rice fields. We'd go early as January and February wearing no more than blue jeans and tennis shoes. We's catch all we could carry out of the swamp. We sold most for 25-40 cents/ pound and boiled the rest and bring to college and share with friends. Oh, we made quit a few with wash tubs full of boiled bugs.
During our roommate days we would bring food from out mothers or cook our own.
We both played guitar and during our free time we would buy and album and learn every son on the album each figuring out different parts of the music.
We had some great experiences together.
Russell was a great man. He was kind, generous and easy to get along with. .
It is a great loss that he is gone.
My sympathies to his family.
